I started as a runner at a post house. The films coming through were enormous. Mission: Impossible, that sort of thing. I made the tea.
Then a few years in post and development at Molinare and at Stolen Picture, which Simon Pegg and Nick Frost started and Sony Pictures had a stake in. Pegg and Frost are my heroes. I was sat in a room reading other people's scripts, thinking, not very generously, that I could do that. Then my contract ended, and I didn't look for another one.
I write dark comedies about people who are bad at being people. Loneliness, and the effort that goes into not mentioning it. Often it's men doing the not mentioning. Some of it is surreal. Most of it is uncomfortable. The comedy has to come out of the character or it doesn't arrive at all.
Amigo, which I wrote with Tom Waterhouse and which stars Seann Walsh, was distributed by Directors Notes and played HollyShorts, Flickerfest, Bolton International and Aesthetica. Eight of my shorts have been selected at BAFTA-qualifying festivals. Others have gone to London Short Film Festival and Norwich Film Festival.
I was runner-up in the Slamdance Screenwriting Competition. I won the Outstanding Comedy Award at The Pitch, judged by Gbemisola Ikumelo and Alice Cabañas, and I have mentioned this more often than was strictly required. I'm a BAFTA Connect member and a member of Directors UK.
Kitty, which I co-directed with Lizzie Hart, was fully funded and made with Footprint Films and Reel Issue Films. And I've just finished The Ladder, a comedy starring Jordan Stephens and Grace Hogg-Robinson.
